Relationship between Free will and Causation from a Compatibilist Perspective

چکیده
The principles of causation and free will are longstanding assumptions in the history of philosophy. The debate on these issues has undergone significant developments in the Western world. Western intellectuals are divided into two camps: compatibilists and incompatibilists, when it comes to this problem. Compatibilists argue for the compatibility between free will and causation by making recourse to factors such as lack of external coercion, character (as in Daniel Dennett), the theory of hierarchy and reflective self-evaluation, reflexive behaviors, fair responsibility, physicalistic naturalism, and compatibility between responsibility and determinism. On the other hand, incompatibilists, who are further classified as determinists and libertarians, present arguments for their position that require a separate discussion. This article explores the arguments put forth by compatibilists, highlighting both their strengths and weaknesses.
